A visit to the Olonne salt marshes
Once again, we’re offering you an experience that’s all about nature.
In the Vendée, there are so many hidden treasures just waiting to be discovered.
Camping de la Bergerie is the ideal base from which to visit all the assets of our rich département.
Just a few minutes’ drive from our campsite, we’ll take you away from it all.
Just a stone’s throw from the city, discover an unspoilt area.
The marshes of Olonne are a real invitation to travel.
A note of softness and calm where you can discover the history of salt.
Advice from the Bergerie :
Bring good sneakers. You’re going for a walk, and you’re not above taking a bike ride.
In your rucksack, pack some tasty provisions for your lunchtime picnic, as well as a bottle of water.
The salt marshes have little or no shade. Sunscreen and caps are a must for the whole family.
For the rest, just follow us… We’ll take care of all your travel needs.
We recommend getting up at dawn. In the morning, it’s easier to observe flora and fauna in their natural environment.
So as soon as the first rays of sunshine appear, get ready.
Head for the bird observatory on Olonne Island
This activity is sure to entertain young and old alike.
Your kids will love watching birds in their natural habitat. All the more so as the observatory is located on a migratory route. You’ll be able to observe species that are usually rare in our region.
It’s about a 15-minute drive to the observatory.
On site, you’ll be greeted by enthusiastic guides in an elevated shelter equipped with long-range goggles.
Thanks to them, you’ll see avocets, stilts, shelducks and egrets evolve in the marsh.

Numerous artists exhibit their work in an exceptional natural setting.
The exhibition is free to visit.
Before continuing your day, fill your stomach
To continue enjoying this spectacular landscape, frozen in time, we suggest you set up on a picnic area.
Picnic tables are available on Rue des Mouettes.
Unfold your picnic tablecloth and enjoy your sandwich in the utmost calm, with a view of the marshes and the Salaire bridge.
This timeless moment will leave you with wonderful memories.
Your children will remember their stay in the Vendée. Later on, it will become one of the most precious memories they’ll ever share with their children.
After this enjoyable family time, it’s time to learn more about the marshes.
On foot, by canoe or by bike, explore the trails at Les Salines.
A team of passionate salt workers with unique know-how will tell you all about the history of salt and share all its secrets with you.
We recommend a boat trip. It will guide you through the heart of the salt marshes and allow you to enjoy breathtaking panoramas. On a 2-hour, 8-kilometer trail, you can observe the flora and fauna while listening to the guide.
At the end of your walk, the salt marshes will be happy to explain to you how they cultivate and harvest this white gold with the wind and the tides.
Leave with your own little bag of salt to give a whole new flavor to your dishes.
On the way back, stop in the state forest of the island of Olonne. Here you can enjoy a stroll under the cool pine trees.
This day in the heart of nature ends with a note of bitterness, it passed much too quickly!
